Independent candidate Asiimwe Chripas Mugisha has declared that he will not step down from the Kibale East parliamentary race in Kamwenge District, rejecting calls to withdraw in favor of incumbent Minister Frank Tumwebaze.
Mugisha insists he is determined to continue his bid, arguing that he has the capacity and record to deliver effective service to his constituents.
Mugisha’s remarks follow a recent National Resistance Movement (NRM) reconciliation meeting chaired by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and NRM Vice Chairperson for Western Region.
The meeting sought to resolve tensions between NRM flag bearers and independent candidates by persuading independents to step down in favor of official party candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.
While several independents have since dropped out of their respective races, Mugisha reaffirmed his commitment to remain in the contest.
“I cannot pull out of the race,” Mugisha said in an interview over the weekend.
“We also have the capacity to perform for our people and address the existing gaps in service delivery in Kibale East.”
Highlighting his contributions to the community, Mugisha cited tangible projects he has already undertaken in the constituency even before holding elective office.
“I have already constructed Marere Secondary School in Biguli Sub-county, which never had a secondary school before. This will help children in the area access education closer to home,” he said.
He added that he had procured two ambulances to improve emergency health response and maternal care services in Kibale East.
“I bought two ambulances to help transport pregnant mothers and other patients in critical condition. These are the kinds of practical interventions our people need,” he emphasized.
Mugisha concluded by reaffirming his resolve to continue with his campaign, noting that his decision stems from a commitment to improve service delivery and uplift the welfare of residents in the constituency.
“I am ready to serve my constituency wholeheartedly,” he declared.
The Kibale East parliamentary seat remains one of the most hotly contested positions in Kamwenge District, with both NRM flag bearers and independent candidates gearing up for a fierce battle as the 2026 elections approach.
